Muscimol Mastery: The Science Behind Amanita Muscaria’s Transformation

Jeff Yauck | January 13, 2025

Amanita muscaria is the legendary red-and-white mushroom immortalized in pop culture and folklore. It is known for providing a host of interesting effects, and for a long time, the assumption was that a compound called muscarine was responsible. However, research shows that two compounds, ibotenic acid and muscimol, are responsible for the mushroom’s unique properties.

Both are naturally present in amanita, but they have very different effects. Ibotenic acid is the precursor compound linked with overstimulation and unwanted side effects. By contrast, muscimol is desired for the calming and often pleasant experience it offers.

In this piece, I explain the roles of ibotenic acid and muscimol and outline the processes needed to turn the Amanita muscaria mushroom into a safer product.

What Is Ibotenic Acid?

While amanita contains a mix of compounds, ibotenic acid and muscimol define its noticeable effects. Although the substances are chemically related, their mechanisms in the brain and the experiences they induce are dissimilar.

Ibotenic acid is a naturally occurring compound classified as a neurotoxin that often excessively stimulates brain activity. According to those who have consumed it, ibotenic acid’s effects may feel overwhelming and chaotic. It may overstimulate your nervous system, leading to adverse effects like nausea, tremors, and twitching. You may also experience confusion, disorientation, and, in some instances, hallucinations.

Overall, ibotenic acid can drain you physically and emotionally, leading to a highly unpleasant and potentially dangerous situation.

What Is Muscimol?

Muscimol is derived from ibotenic acid via decarboxylation (or decarbing), which involves removing a carboxyl group. This transaction completely changes the compound’s properties. Muscimol acts as a potent GABA agonist and slows down neural activity. The result is a calm and sedating effect.

Those who use muscimol say it gives them a sense of relaxation and even introspection. You may experience vivid imagery and a tranquil mental state. Unlike ibotenic acid, muscimol has fewer unwanted side effects and is much easier to manage.

Moreover, the effects of muscimol are generally fairly predictable. Given the pleasant experience, it’s hardly surprising that amanita users want to discover what muscimol offers. So, how do manufacturers turn ibotenic acid into muscimol? Let’s find out!

How to Convert Ibotenic Acid to Muscimol

It’s a bad idea to eat raw Amanita muscaria because it is filled with ibotenic acid. If your goal is to experience nausea, vomiting, and potentially nasty hallucinations, go right ahead! However, if you would rather have a soothing experience, only buy amanita products that have been thoroughly decarbed to turn the ibotenic acid into muscimol. Here are three ways to decarboxylate amanita.

The Heat Is On

Heat is the most common and effective way to convert ibotenic acid into muscimol. Our amanita gummies have gone through this process, so you can rest assured that you’ll feel the effects you’re looking for. However, if you have fresh amanita and want to use heat to decarb it, here’s what you must do.

Preheat your oven to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit and spread the mushrooms on a baking tray. Depending on the thickness of the slices, bake for 30 to 90 minutes.

This isn’t necessarily the best option, so you may choose to simmer the mushrooms instead. The so-called “simmering method” involves placing the fresh or dried amanita in water and heating it to between 194 and 203 degrees Fahrenheit, just below the water’s boiling point of 212 degrees.

Simmer the mixture gently for up to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Strain the liquid to separate the mushroom pieces since the water now contains muscimol. Use the muscimol liquid to create amanita tea or a tincture.

Drying and Aging

If you dry and store the mushrooms properly, decarbing can happen naturally over time. For instance, if you harvest fresh amanita, dry them in a warm and well-ventilated area. This process is more convenient if you have a food dehydrator, as you can set it to 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Over time, the ibotenic acid partially turns into muscimol, although this is a less effective decarbing method than heating the mushroom.

Another option is to store dried amanita in an airtight container for several months. While this process may further reduce the mushrooms’ ibotenic acid content, it’s a painfully slow conversion method that’s not particularly efficient.

Chemical Extraction

Sophisticated equipment is needed to create commercially viable products like our muscimol gummies. The process typically involves dissolving the mushroom material in a solvent to separate the ibotenic acid and muscimol. Next, the manufacturer will use controlled heat to convert any leftover ibotenic acid. It’s a highly effective method but requires specialized machinery and detailed knowledge, so please leave it to the professionals!

If you plan to decarb amanita, please note that muscimol is heat-sensitive. Temperatures above 200 degrees Fahrenheit can degrade it, reducing its effectiveness. Also, if you want consistent results, it’s best to use dried mushrooms because fresh ones have a high water content.

The Safer Path: Transforming Ibotenic Acid into Muscimol Is Essential for Better Results

Muscimol is by far the safer compound when exploring Amanita muscaria. Its calming, pleasant effects make it a popular option for anyone seeking relaxation. By contrast, ibotenic acid offers unpredictable, adverse effects such as dizziness, nausea, and potential hallucinations.

Fortunately, it’s possible to prepare amanita to transform its ibotenic acid content into muscimol, thus reducing the likelihood of experiencing unpleasant side effects.
