CBD for Menopause [Why it's Becoming a New Trend]

Menopause is of course something that all women – as long as they reach a certain age – will have to go through in their lives. Often, women will ignore the encroaching symptoms of menopause in the naïve belief that it will “pass” quickly or unnoticed. Or, they might just assume that it won’t happen to them for a long time, and therefore do not take any time to think about it.

However, the sooner we think about menopause and start treating our bodies seriously, the better we will be able to handle it. And unfortunately, it is important for women to know how to handle menopause themselves, as the medical healthcare system is incredibly underprepared to deal with its symptoms.

Since women have been enduring menopause since the dawn of time, we have found ways to cope with the issues it brings. Before Western medicine, this was of course done using traditional herbal remedies – what’s to say these won’t work nowadays?

What is Menopause?

Simply put, menopause is when a woman stops having periods. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, and is caused by a decline in oestrogen. Although rare, some women experience premature menopause before the age of 40.

At first, periods become less frequent and more spaced out, disrupting your regular cycle. This can continue for months or even years before the periods stop altogether. Unfortunately, menopausal symptoms can actually continue for 4 years or more after your last period.

The persistent nature of menopausal symptoms is what makes it so hard to deal with. Changes in periods are obviously a key sign of the menopause, but there are also other symptoms. These include:

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Reduced libido
  • Memory and concentration difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Vaginal dryness and pain
  • Mood changes, including low mood or anxiety
  • Heart palpitations
  • Joint stiffness and pain
  • Recurrent UTIs

This list of symptoms are all irritating and sometimes painful. What’s more, menopause can increase the likelihood of developing other ailments like osteoporosis.

Sadly, there is not much that can be done about menopause. The symptoms can be managed with various therapies and medications like hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but these drugs can cause side effects like headaches, breast tenderness, vaginal bleeding, and an increased risk of breast cancer.

This makes it a worrying problem to try and treat. But what about CBD; could it lend a hand in the treatment of menopause?

Exploring Menopause and CBD

While CBD will NOT directly help Menopause, it may be able to assist with other aspects. Are there multiple symptoms of menopause that CBD may be able to assist with?

As you probably know, menopause can cause night sweats, which may also lead to an uncomfortable sleep. It has been shown that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can relieve hot flashes and night sweats because these symptoms have a neurochemical basis and partly take place in the serotonin system.

CBD has an impact on the serotonin system. Although no specific studies have been done on CBD for night sweats, its connection with the serotonin system suggests that it could have an effect.

Furthermore, if you struggle with fatigue and drowsiness as a result of lost sleep, then CBD may be able to give you a boost of energy. Studies have shown that taking CBD in the morning can lead to increased wakefulness, making you more alert and able to perform your daily tasks.Be warned though, because taking it at night can make you sleepier! Of course, if insomnia is one of your troubles, then CBD has come to the rescue once again!

A huge problem for many women during the menopause is weight gain. Estogren helps us to burn calories, so producing less of it makes it easier to put on weight.

In fact, women going through the menopause burn less fat during exercise than other women. The change in hormones encourages your body to trade in lean muscle mass for abdominal fat, and the fat storage creates weight gain, as well as a higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Luckily, cannabidiol may be able to help here too. First of all, cannabinoids like CBD may help to regulate appetite and therefore help you to keep your waist circumference lower. Secondly, CBD can help to lower insulin levels and improve metabolism..

How to Take CBD for Menopause

There are a number of ways to take CBD, and the method you choose is up to your personal preferences. For example, a topical CBD application could be a great idea if you are looking to target a specific area.

However, it may be best to take a more general CBD supplement that can promote overall wellness. This can be in the form of a sublingual oil, or in the form of capsules. CBD edibles, such as CBD-infused chocolate, are good too, because they also provide you with comfort food! That being said, they might not be best if you’re trying to keep your calories and sugar intake down!

Oils are a great option, because they are generally more potent and offer higher bioavailability.

So, What’s the Conclusion?

It is really no wonder that many women nowadays are turning to alternative options. Could CBD be one of those? There are many ways to take CBD, so it’s crucial to explore all the options to find what works for you. Let us know how it worked.
